IN MEMORY OF CLAUD
We were very sad to hear that Claud Hammell has passed away. Claud was a long term member of the Sicamous and remembered the boat from when he was a boy. He would come in and tell us stories about the good old days. He loved trains and was very involved in the building of the model railway. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Here is his obituary, as was published in the Herald Newspaper:
“Thomas Claud Hammell
Thomas Claud Hammell, known as Claud, died on December 16, 2012 in Penticton, B.C. where he lived most of his adult life. Claud was 89 years old.
Claud was born in Whitewater, Manitoba on September 20, 1923. He and his family moved to Deloraine when he was 6 years old and he spent his boyhood years on the family farm. When Claud was 18 he moved to Winnipeg where he studied radio operations. He then moved to BC where he worked for Transport Canada for 51 years. After short stints in Northern BC and on Vancouver Island, Claud was posted to Carmi and then, in 1949, to Penticton. Claud was very close to his Aunt Dogni who lived in Kelowna and spent many days off with her. They traveled together to Deloraine to visit his parents, Jim and Mary Hammell, every summer. After his father passed away, Claud travelled to Deloraine twice a year to visit his mom. Claud loved history and trains. He was an active member of the Okanagan Historical Society and other Penticton groups. He helped build the model train on the SS Sicamous Inland Marine Museum. His greatest love in recent years was the Kettle Valley Steam Railroad where he spent many hours visiting and riding on the train. Claud will be missed by his cousin Fern (Ron) McKenzie and their daughters Debbie (Mike) Stockdale, Devray (Gary) Lafferty and daughter-in-law Beverley Ivens (Neil McKenzie, deceased) for whom Claud was like an uncle. The family wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. John Surkan and the team at Nurse Next Door for their compassionate care for Claud. A graveside service will be held at the Del-Win cemetery in Deloraine Manitoba on January 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Penticton, B.C., details to be announced. Donations in memory of Claud may be made to the Kettle Valley Steam Railroad Society or the charity of your choice.”
